weirdqafanSo today is a birthday for me of sorts. Ok, well...maybe not birthday. Maybe more like anniversary.
Today is the 2 year anniversary of my getting sucked into QAF!
(Translation: I saw my first ever qaf episode 2 years ago today)
I was sitting here earlier and I suddenly thought, wasn't it in November when I first saw Episode 101? I figured that it was in earlier November and it had passed and almost felt kinda sad that I had missed the day, so I checked my Episode 101 file and discovered that nope, I hadn't missed it~ it's today!
So that got me remembering why, how and reactions to deciding to watch an episode of this show, getting it and what I thought of it.
So, when I went away to college 2 years ago, I was thrilled. Yes for all obvious reasons, but also for one more reason. ETHERNET INTERNET CONNECTION! Yes I am pathetic, but we have fucking DIAL-UP at home. So I was thrilled not to have to spend 5 minutes online doing nothing while one page was loading. Also, it made it easier to download music, which I was a big fan of doing (still am~ screw record companies :|).
I downloaded music and plenty of it. Then I thought to myself, 'Why don't I download music videos?' From there I moved on to TV shows and then the occasional old (like 5+ years) movie.
Also, at school I had a TV. Now in Oakland/Bay Area, if you do not have cable for a TV and are just relying on Broadcast with antenna, you are fucked. And not in a good way. Reception is horrible up there. Well, in the dorm, we didn't have cable TV access, so I had to rely on my TV's rabbit ears and only got 2 channels. On one channel at 6:00 & 7:30pm they showed Will & Grace reruns. I'd never watched it before, but decided to give it a shot. I was SOOO glad I did! *Loved* it! So, I decided to see as much of the series as possible and began downloading episodes through Winmx. I was doing well, getting a lot of episodes. When I noticed one thing that most all of the users with a LOT of W&G episodes also had.
Episodes of something called Queer as Folk.
I was intrigued, so I went on line to look up what that was. When I found out that it was the show Hal Sparks had left Talk Soup for, I decided to download it. I really liked him on Talk Soup. He was a decent replacement for John Hensen and was not happy when he left. And at the time when I heard that he was going to be on a new series, I had wanted to watch it, but we only have basic cable. In fact at the time, I remember driving down Ventura Blvd. in Encino and seeing a bus stop with an add for this show with Hal Sparks and some other guys on it (it's also turned out to be the cover of the Season 1 DVDs, with the 3 boys).
So I downloaded episode 101 of this show, Queer as Folk, not completely realizing what it was about.
So, I'm watching it and is all going well. Hot guy sees cute young guy and you could practically see him suck in a breath at it. Completely enthralled and very amusing.
Two cute guys meet under a streetlamp. How Casablanca-esque.
Am cringing a bit as this blond kid describes the effects some drugs have on him, when 10 min. 40 sec. into it my eyes go big. 'Damn! That guy's wearing a thong!' (yes, I had never actually seen many men wearing thongs at that point in my life. That's sure as fuck changed over these couple of years ;). So then the guy pulls it down, completely exposing a nice, if not a bit flat, ass. Ok, *sarcastic* big wow~ seen plenty of butts on screen before. But it was accompanied with a VERY nice line: 'So are you coming or going. Or coming and then going. Or coming and staying." And the blond guy goes kinda speechless at that point and all 'O_O' which amused me to no end.
Then as I'm watching the blond approach the guy, I'm waiting for the scene to change as he gets closer and closer. It's not like they're gonna show anything right? Then the blond reaches the brunet (Brian who?) and damn~ aren't their mouths kinda close together and ooh, he just undid his pants a-and he just licked the blond's lips (that was kinda hot) and they are kissing. Oh wait!

OMG! THEY ARE KISSING!
THEY ACTUALLY SHOW THIS ON TELEVISION?!
SOME TV EXEC MUSTA GROWN A PAIR.

After I saw this scene I paused the episode. Then went back and rewatched the scene. Watched it. Paused it. Rewatched it...again. Did this about 5 times. I just could not believe that they showed this on television and DAY-YUM! They are HOT! I had seen two men kiss before, but there was just something about these two that just screamed 'You MUST watch us together because we are FUCKING HOT and will make you go 'GUH!' ALL. NIGHT. LONG!'
Well, they didn't lie.
So I eventually tore myself away from that scene to continue watching the episode. Saw Brian on top of Justin on the bed (O_O is his hand...?!), listened to the conversation (What the hell is rimming?!) and merrily watched as this Brian guy met his son and took the cute blond kid with him to the hospital (who is apparently named Justin and Brian might let suck his tits later). Was really touched by the scene between the two guys on the roof.
'I'm gonna fuck you. I'm gonna fuck you all....night.'
A few words, but a million pictures those said. And then, damn, did he just swallow him whole?! Talk about a talent! I was so fucking glad that Justin said he was going with Brian. Had to see what else he had in store for the boy.

The morning after I couldn't get over how gorgeous Justin looked. So fucking angelic and cute.

Oh, please don't let that be an idle threat! (see, I was already a bit of a kinky perv). When I saw Brian shove Justin against the shower wall and kiss his neck, I got this sense of deja vu. Eventually I remembered that I had actually seen that bit before. On a Showtime commercial at home. I watched the rest of the episode in a bit of lusty hazy.
I could not get over how hot it was seeing these two guys together. I mean DAMN! So naturally, when the episode finished I restarted it. Making sure to rewind some scenes to watch over and over a bit. And still couldn't get over the hottness. Then couldn't get over what a big freak I must be for thinking that two guys together was so hot and that I was probably the only chick on the planet who thought that way. *snort* If only I knew then, right?
So I spent time downloading more episodes. You'd think I'd go in order right? Wrong. It's not that easy downloading specific episodes. I kinda just had to get what most people had available. The second QAF episode I ever saw was 202. A TON of people had it, so it was easy to download. Yes, it was a bit odd, since I hadn't seen almost all of Season 1, but acutally not so much. I didn't dwell on why Justin was still in Brian's life after he gave him the brush off in front of the school. I mean come on~ I saw that ass!
When in that episode I saw what had obviously happened to Justin, I downloaded 122 IMMEDIATELY. During which, I actually started bawling during the dance itself, since I knew what was coming. EVIL HOBBS!
After that, I got 201, 120 & 204 and all of Season 2 & 110, 114 & 119 after that. I bought the Season 1 DVDs at Best Buy on my 19th birthday as a gift to myself. When my mom asked what I wanted to do for my birthday and I said go to Best Buy, she just looked at me odd and then like I was crazy since my birthday is December 23~ 2 days before Christmas. We thought lines would be nuts, so we got there early, but they weren't and I bought my DVDs (mom raised an eyebrow at the show's title). I then spent that entire vacation getting intimately aquainted with them.
So, that would be how I got sucked into the fandom. After that I saw the majority of Season 2. I saw episode 220, before most of the rest of the season I started reading fanfics, 'cuz I was NOT happy with that ending for the show's season. First fanfic I ever read was a fantasy Season 3 of sorts, Send Me An Angel by Snow White. One of the only decent abusive!Ethan fics, I think. The whole abusive!Ethan got a little tired after the 10th story with it.
So I started reading fics and watching the show and haven't stopped since!
Also, my 21st birthday is one month from today~ December 23rd!! Yay! I can then legally drink alcohol!

and i saw the eps out of order as well: i started with 118, saw until the end of season 2, after which the tv network started with reruns, so i saw 101 after 220, and around march this year i really wanted to know what had happened after s2. so i found some awesome people who sent me a lot of eps and found the other on kazaa and bearshare. that's when my obsession with QAF really began... i also read my first fics (i think they were the really long series by Miss Miko). and this september i discovered the wonder that is LJ and totally got sucked into the fandom

Date: 11/23/04 06:42 am (UTC)I caught it when it first aired on TV -- my best friend made me watch it with him, and OMG am I grateful for that. Otherwise I probably would have had no clue. He moved toward the end of S2, leaving me without Showtime and QAF. I didn't see the end of S2 until S3 was already over, and THAT is when the whole fandom thing started calling. And here we are now!
