Not being one privy to knowledge of anal sex there's been something in regards to it that I wann know:

To Lube or Not To Lube...Yeah, that sadly enough is my question.

I've read of this being discussed before in a couple of people's LJs, but with differing opinions.
I don't remember who said what or exactly what was said, so I'm paraphrasing.

On the case for lube not being necessary, was also part of a discussion of someone becoming 'loose' over time. If I recall correctly, the person said that it wasn't that a certain orifice gets loose with use, but that the person becomes accustomed to fucking and the feeling/force of entry, so that they are much more relaxed. And if they are relaxed, their hole is relaxed. Hence, not as much resistence in inserting a 9" dick. And that also the need for lube wasn't as necessary, since again, more relaxed and that, in addition to natural ass juice, provided enough ease for smooth fucking.

On the case for lube being a necessity, I think the person said that no matter how much sex someone has, how often or with how big a partner/toy/inanimate object, if there was not some amount of extra lubrication added, then the person would be highly likely to tear and possibly bleed each time. That the ass can only provide so much fluid and that one's hole more or less, shrinks back to normal size after fucking (not immediately, but you know what I mean). So, as a result each and every time there's entry, it's not a smooth, 'Insert Cock "A". Into Ass "B". Thrust. Repeat. Process'. Not that it's extremely painful, the person can get accustomed to any pain, which will make it seem as though it lessens over time. But that without lube, taking a 9" dick inside an ass, no matter how many times, would not be a good idea and could cause major pain/damage.

Now both of these arguments are quite reasonable and convincing and it could be very likely a combination of both or maybe even something that depends on the person receiving the aforementioned 9" cock. I don't know.

And I was just wondering if anyone wanted to chime in here with their opinion or if someone knows from experience, since "anal sex is not exclusive to gay men". ( <--I think I read that line in a RPS fic once. Gale said it to Randy and Randy got grossed out at the idea of women and anal sex. I think he wrinkled his nose and was like 'What's the point? in regards to women & sex' I think it was a burntsmore fic, but I could be wrong. Great line whoever wrote it).

Well, it depends on the guy and the circumstances. If the catcher is experienced, and relaxed, it can actually be possible to have non-lubricated anal sex without too much damage or pain. There would probably be some tearing of the anal ring tissue, and some bleeding, but not so much as to require medical attention. On the other hand, if the pitcher is rough, or the catcher inexperienced (or the situation is a rape or non-consensual), there could be substantial bleeding requiring a trip to the ER and maybe some stitches (though I don't actually know if stitches would be the best treatment for a tear in that area).

The real danger in anal sex is the possibility of tearing the inner membrane of the anal canal, which can lead to peritonitis. But that is VERY rare in normal sex - it's more likely to happen from rape or inexperienced fisters (fingernails can be sharp).

For the most part, non-lubed anal sex is a no-go, the catcher wouldn't be able to stand the pain, though there are guys who are able to relax the muscles enough to do it.
